The busy access road from Ceuta, Spain, to the Moroccan border is receiving a 3.5 million euros ($3.7 million) upgrade to enhance safety and traffic flow. Funded by the European Union (EU)’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, this project aims to alleviate congestion and improve the experience for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The route, which sees an average of thirteen thousand two hundred vehicles daily, experiences a significant surge in traffic during the summer due to Operation Marhaba, a large-scale border crossing between Spain and Morocco.

The project will transform the road into a three-lane configuration, with two lanes towards the border and one lane away. Each lane will be 3 meters wide, accommodating vehicles of all sizes. Additionally, the road will be resurfaced, and wide sidewalks will be constructed on both sides for pedestrians and cyclists. The initiative includes new urban furniture, ramps, and access steps to ensure accessibility for all users, enhancing safety and accessibility on this crucial border route.
